Sunday Rewind: The Playbook for Achieving Product-Market Fit by Dan Olsen
This week’s Sunday Rewind takes us back to a 2017 talk from Dan Olsen at ProductTank San Francisco, where he discussed advice from his Lean Product Playbook on how to achieve product-market fit.
Dan begins by explaining the five layers of his Product-Market Fit Pyramid framework. At the base of the pyramid, you have the target customer. Just above that are their underserved needs. These two layers together represent the market. The top three layers focus on the product itself: value proposition, feature set, and user experience. The value proposition layer deals with addressing customer needs in a superior way compared to other products. The feature set layer details the specific functionalities that meet customer requirements. Finally, the user experience layer encapsulates how customers interact with the product.
He then walks through his lean product process, which includes six steps that help articulate and test key hypotheses by progressing through the layers of the Product-Market Fit Pyramid. Dan also shares other important frameworks that complement the main process. He concludes his talk with a real-life case study.
