Moving from Product Management to Product Strategy

Climbing the career ladder from product management to a strategy role is a common objective for many product managers. In this week’s Sunday Rewind, we revisit the time when product leader Becky Yelland shared insights from her transition from product management to product strategy.

Becky acknowledges that, being a hands-on person, she found it challenging to step away from the daily tasks of a product owner when shifting to a strategic position. She mentioned that this change happened naturally as she initially continued to handle product owner responsibilities while managing the team. This was necessary because there weren’t enough product managers to oversee the entire product suite.

She believes that the ideal state for a product manager is to both ‘do’ and ‘manage,’ allowing one to keep honing their skills while participating in the management team. If fortunate, one might even have the opportunity to shape both the overall business strategy and the product strategy.
